The Gloucester Police Department operates several specialized units and divisions. The maritime location of our city means that GPD is responsible for not just roadways but beachfront and waterways as well. Specialized units include:
Harbor Marine Unit
The Gloucester Police Department operates a 27-foot SafeBoat powered with twin 225hp engines, capable of speeds up to 43 knots. This allows us to effectively patrol the waterways and enforce the law on the water. It operates most of the year. It is also equipped with a fire pump capable of a 500 gallon per minute output.
Motorcycle Unit
GPD operates two motorcycles with six trained officers for eight months out of the year. They specialize in traffic enforcement but also have a valuable role in our community policing efforts by allowing officers to get out into the public and walk the downtown, interacting with citizens on a daily basis. We also utilize our motorcycles for crowd control for Gloucester’s many annual events, in which cruisers are impractical.
ATV Unit
The Gloucester Police Department operates three ATVS for patrol in the reservoir and watershed areas of the City, and enforce laws surrounding the misuse of each. We also utilize them for special events.
K-9 Unit
GPD has 2 K-9 Units, both cross-trained in fugitive and missing person searches and narcotics searches. They are assigned one each to the day and evening shifts an are called out as needed.
